洋書マラソン ２冊目 2021年年末に読了 215p
洋書小説に慣れていなくても短いので読了しやすいと思う。
邦題は『月と６ペンス』
画家ゴーギャンの人生がモデル。
主人公ストリックランドの性格はやはり英語の方が掴みやすい。
日本語だと少しクセのある性格という印象があるが、英語で読むととにかく忖度しない人というもっとシンプルな印象。
株式仲介人をしていたストリックランドはある日突然奥さんと子供を残してロンドンからパリに引っ越してしまう。
目的は絵を描くため。
そして2度と家族と会うことはなかった。
このあたりの自分のやりたいことのために全く忖度しない度合いが異常なレベル。
著者モームの筆力にも吸い込まれる。

ストリックランドは共通価値のない記号によってしか表現できない。貨幣や言語という凡庸な共通価値に溢れている我々現代人の生活へ強烈な打撃を加えるような文章だ。
内なる力、衝動に身をゆだねるがごとくストリックランドが人間業とは思えないとんでもない大作を生み出した。
本来、言葉では表現できないすごい経験をあえて言語したサマーセットモームの筆力も素晴らしい。
ストリックランドという一人の天才のメンタリティを描いた本か。
